Electrical Services

Comfortec Heating, Cooling & Plumbing has licensed electricians in Spirit Lake for repairs, panel swaps and upgrades, fuse box replacement, new construction and remodel wiring, and the fixtures people forget about: ceiling fans, exhaust fans, and attic fans. A breaker that won’t stop tripping, an outlet that quit, a light that flickers when the furnace kicks on. Those are the calls we take every week. And because we’re also your heating, cooling, and plumbing company, one call covers the whole job.

Electrical Service and Repair

Most electrical complaints trace back to one of three things: a loose connection, a worn-out switch or outlet, or a circuit that’s carrying more than it was built to hold. A breaker that keeps tripping is usually the symptom, not the disease. Reset it and the problem’s still there. We go to the cause: the switch, the outlet, the box behind it, or the wiring that failed. We fix it and tell you what actually went wrong.

Panel Swaps and Panel Upgrades

Your panel is where every circuit in the house starts, and when it’s failing the whole house feels it. We replace panels that are worn or failing, and we upgrade when a home needs more capacity than the old box can give. A few things mean it’s time to look at your panel:

  • Breakers tripping all the time under normal use, not just when everything’s running at once
  • A panel that’s full, with no room left for new circuits
  • Lights dimming when the air conditioner, the well pump, or a big appliance starts up
  • Adding a basement, a shop, a kitchen remodel, or new heating and cooling equipment
  • Rust, heat marks, or a breaker that won’t reset, and that last one you should not ignore

Not every older panel needs to go. Sometimes a repair, or a couple of added circuits, is the right answer. We’ll tell you which, and we won’t sell you a bigger panel than you need.

Fuse Box Replacement

A lot of older homes around the Lakes still run on a fuse box. That was fine for a household running a stove, a few lights, maybe a refrigerator. It isn’t fine for a home with central air, a well pump, an electric range, and a whole stack of electronics all at once. We swap fuse boxes for modern breaker panels, sized for what you run now and what you’re planning to add, not a guess at some future that may never come.

New Construction and Electrical Remodels

We handle the whole electrical side of new homes, additions, and remodels: layout, design, wiring, conduit, and installing the finished devices. The cheapest time to put an outlet or a switch exactly where you want it is before the drywall goes up, so we like to walk the plan with you early rather than after. Working with your builder or general contractor is no problem, and it saves a lot of back-and-forth when the wiring’s ours to plan.

Light Fixtures and Ceiling Fans

We install and replace light fixtures, inside and out, and ceiling fans. One thing people don’t know about fans: the box holding them has to be rated for the weight and the motion. A plain light box isn’t built for that, and a fan on a weak box is a thing that fails. We check the box and the support before the fan goes up, every time.

Bathroom Exhaust Fans and Attic Fans

A bathroom exhaust fan only helps if it’s sized for the room and vented to the outside. Vent it into the attic or an empty space and you’ve just moved the moisture somewhere it can rot things. We install and replace bathroom exhaust fans and attic fans, and on bathroom remodels we run the fan work alongside our plumbing crews, so it’s done in the same pass.

Garage and Shop Lighting

Garage and shop lighting, outlets, and circuits are regular work for us, including on acreages and rural properties around the Iowa Great Lakes. A shop lit right is a shop where you can actually see what you’re working on, and that’s no small thing in a place you spend your hours.

Switches, Outlets, and Electrical Upgrades

We add outlets where you keep reaching for an extension cord, install dedicated circuits for large appliances, and update wiring in older homes that have outgrown their original electrical. A few added outlets, and a couple of dedicated circuits, can make a room work the way it’s actually used.

Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, and Electrical from One Contractor

A lot of home projects cross trades without anyone meaning to. A new furnace or air conditioner needs the right circuits. Swapping a water heater can pull in electrical work. A bathroom remodel needs a plumber and an electrician on the same schedule, and when those are two different companies you’re the one chasing the timing. With Comfortec it’s one crew, one schedule, and one company standing behind the work. If the rest of the job’s in the works too, we also do heating and cooling, plumbing, and lake home service.

Electrical Service FAQs

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Iowa?

Often, yes. Iowa runs a statewide electrical permit and inspection program, and new wiring, added circuits, and panel work generally require a permit and inspection. Swapping a device for the same size and type usually does not. When your job needs a permit, we handle it.

Yes, and a lot of our work is older homes. Many around the Lakes still run on a fuse box and old wiring, and we replace fuse boxes with modern breaker panels and update wiring in homes that have outgrown their original electrical.

A breaker trips when a circuit draws more current than it should or when there’s a fault on the line. It’s doing its job. If it trips often, the circuit may be overloaded or there may be a problem with the wiring or a device, and it’s worth having an electrician find the cause.
